Supporting Women in Marine Science: four female PhD graduates for 2020 - 2022

The Seascape Ecology Research Group is extremely proud to announce an all female PhD graduate cohort for the period of 2020 - 2022. All four graduates completed their PhD degrees under the supervision of PI, Prof. Nicola James. The Seascapes group is proud of the commitment that these women have towards their research.

The names and theses titles of the four graduates are listed below:

Dr Kerry-ann van der Walt (April 2020): Thermal tolerance and the potential effects of climate change on coastal intertidal and estuarine organisms in the Kariega Estuary and adjacent intertidal coastline, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Dr Carla Edworthy (April 2021): Coastal pH variability and the eco-physiological and behavioural response of a coastal fish species in light of future ocean acidification

Dr Phakama Nodo (April 2022): Demersal fish distribution in shallow marine nearshore and estuarine seascape of Algoa Bay: nursery areas and the effect of environmental drivers

Dr Phumza Ndaleni (October 2022): Understanding resource partitioning in three species of Gobiidae living in the warm temperate Sundays Estuary.


All four of these graduates are currently postdoctoral research fellows at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity and Dr Nodo and Dr Edworthy have continued as postdocs in the Seascape Ecology Research group.
